Melvin Simmons was born on May 31, 1939 in Troy Alabama to Isaac and Geather Simmons. Melvin attended Pike County Alabama Schools. Melvin grew up farming and some of the chores he did was picking cotton and shucking peanuts. He learned how to drive by riding on a tractor. At the age of 18, he left Alabama and went to Ohio to pursue employment. Once in arrived in Ohio, he started working at the Hamilton Foundry. Melvin loved fishing, Cowboy movies, working on his cars and going to get coffee at McDonalds.
Melvin met Evelyn Bailey in Ohio, and the two were married. To this union seven children were born, Michael, Theresa, Melvin Jr., Julia, Deborah, Sheila, and Barbara.
While living in Hamilton, Ohio Melvin became a member of Mt. Ebal UHC. While being a member at Mt. Ebal UHC Melvin accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour. Melvin would bring his family to Sunday School and church; he enjoyed praying and teaching his family the word of God. He didn't just tell his family about the word of God, but he also told his friends and anyone he came in contact with along the way. Melvin was a deacon at Mt. Ebal UHC and a grounds keeper. Melvin enjoyed giving to his church. He taught his children to give to the house of the Lord also.
Before there was ever Lyft or Uber, Melvin provided various services to family and friends; such as providing transportation back and forth to work, shopping trips, and doctors' appointments. Melvin also became President of the Resident Council for the Bambo Harris and Riverside Apartment Complexes.
The Lord decided to take Melvin Simmons home on December 26, 2023. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Simmons; his mother, Geather Simmons; his sisters, Ruth Simmons and Wilma Manley, and one son, Melvin Simmons Jr.
