Maxine “Sara” Lewis was born on May 11, 1937 in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of Henry and Ada Reid. She departed this life peacefully on January 6, 2022. Sara attended the Hamilton public school system and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1957. She married the love of her life, James R. Lewis on July 26, 1958. Their marriage spanned over 63 years. This union birthed three children: Vaughn, Lance, and Alicia.
From a young age, she showed a natural affinity for working with children. This passion led Sara to continue her education at the University of Cincinnati, where she received an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Development. She was a preschool teacher for Head Start for many years and later volunteered her time in the Israel Baptist Church nursery. Sara went on to work and retire from Mercy Hospital North as a dietary supervisor where she trained and mentored many high school students.
Sara was a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister and friend to all. She was tiny in stature, but mighty in spirit. Her fiery spirit is what captivated those who knew and loved her. Sara and her husband Jimmy both retired within a year of each other (1994 and 1995). After retirement she enjoyed traveling throughout the country and abroad with her husband. You could often find them at local football games, basketball games and district and state track meets. She spent many years volunteering her service with her husband at Israel Baptist Church.
They were always together!
She was preceded in death by her loving parents Henry and Ada, her brothers David, Earl, and James Reid, her sisters; Dorothy Sears, Beatrice Dillingham, Geneva Lewis, Ruth Prigette; and grandson JoVaughn Joseph. She leaves to mourn a loving and devoted family which includes her husband of 63 years, James Royal Lewis; her sister Julia Reid, sons; Vaughn Royal Lewis (wife Lori Lewis), Lance Ramon Lewis (Wife Mindy Lewis), and daughter; Alicia Renee Joseph (husband Clarence Joseph); grandchildren; Andrea Wood, Derrick Lewis, Danielle Abney, Daniel Lewis, Isiah Lewis, Payton Lewis, Taylor Joseph, London Lewis, and Legend Lewis.
