Mary Boyd Obituary

Mary Alice Hopkins Boyd was born to Getrude Truss and Percy Hopkins on May 24, 1930, in Meridian, Mississippi and departed this life on Saturday, February 24th at 9:30am in Cincinnati, OH. She was the eldest of twelve siblings.

Mary was educated in Meridian Public Schools. She accepted Christ in April of 1946 and joined Sunlight Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend W. C. Claude.

Mary united in Holy Matrimony with her love, Edward J. Boyd in October of 1950. To this union five children were born: Glenda Lanell, Vivian Elois, Sharon Marie, James Edward, and Michelle Denise. Mary and Edward shared 47 years of love and companionship until Edward’s passing in 1997. Mary continued to count and celebrate their anniversary every year since.

Mary and Edward relocated from Meridian, MS to Cincinnati, OH with their two daughters Glenda and Vivian in 1953. The family united with Calvary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Elijah Kelley. It was at Calvary where Mary met and was adopted by Eula Mosby into her family. Mary also found lifelong friends in Dorothy Brooks, Jennie Holman, and Vera Long. Through these relationships, Mary added more children to her family as Godmother to Pat Ruff, Beverly Holman, Wynna McCloud, and Priscilla Hammond.

In 1971, Mary and her family joined the New Mission Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. George Q. Brown. Mary was a member of the Pastor’s Aid Ministry and attended the Adult Sunday School Class. She taught the Christian Maturity Class for many years. She also served in various capacities on the Deaconess Ministry.

Mary worked as a domestic when she first moved to Cincinnati to help support her family. She also owned her own restaurant, M & J’s Fish and Bar-B-Que for several years. However, she would tell you her principal and most significant role was being a mom to her five children. Her love didn’t just stop with her kids. Mary was a mom to anyone who needed a mom. She always made herself available for encouragement, guidance, a stern talking to or just a warm hug. When anyone told Mary, “I love you,” her usual response was, “I love you more.” One the guiding verses Mary lived by and quoted often was “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3: 5-6 (NLT)

Mary leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory, five children: Glenda, Vivian, Sharon (Robert), James (Marilyn) and Michelle. Eight grandchildren: Jaime Danielle (Carlton), Robert Jason, Jamica Ann (Juan), Ashley Cherise (Jacob), Edward Ryan, Cameron Alan (Ama), Jordan Blair and Logan Marlyse. Ten great grandchildren, a precious daughter (in-law) Marilyn Boyd, and a very dear son (in-law) Robert Marshall. Mary also leaves a beloved sister, Dorothy Amos (Ben), and two treasured brothers, Rev. Bennie J. Hopkins (Mary) and Dr. Jimmy Hopkins (Betty), several godchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
