Jessie M. McCoy

Jessie M. McCoy 89, formerly of Middletown, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2023, in Toledo, Ohio, where she resided with her daughter. She was born April 2, 1934 in Cherokee County, Piedmont, Alabama to parents Ezekiel and Nancy Lawrence Harbour.  After her mother passed when she was 12, she assisted her father with farming, raising and butchering hogs and picking cotton.  She worked hard, sometimes missing school to help out at home but was able to graduate high school.  She later met and married her crown jewel, Hershel Lee McCoy on December 12, 1955, on the same day she left her home in Alabama and made Middletown her new home.

Upon arriving in Middletown , She joined New Era Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to Tried Stone Baptist Church, under the Pastoral leadership of Rev. Herbert Hart. She was on the Mothers' Board, a member of the Senior Choir and served as Sunday School teacher. She later moved her membership to New Life Christian Center under the Pastorship of Rev. Charles McKinney. She loved the Lord with all her heart and witnessed to any and every one of his goodness. She would often say, "the Lord will make a way, somehow" whatever the situation was. She and Deacon Wesley Helvey would visit nursing homes on Saturday evenings, to sing and pray for the sick and elderly. She really enjoyed doing it. It was her ministry.

She worked for several private families and was highly regarded for her impeccable work ethic. She was taught to always do a good job at whatever she did. It was her motto.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years (Hershel), four brothers (Ade, Ronald Lee, Charles Edward and John (Preacher) Harbour, and her sister, Bessie Ruth and her special friends Marlene Merrida, Cathern Simpson, Chris Gamble and Jessie Pearl Bankston.

Cherishing her memories is her son, Larry (Denise) McCoy and daughter, Jean (Sissy) McCoy-Churchwell (Clifford), three grandchildren; sister Rosie Lee Thompson (Donald) of Piedmont, Alabama; special friends, Gloria Fair, Viola Hunter and Alice Brandon, along with a host of nieces and nephews who were more like her children.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years (Hershel), four brothers (Ade, Ronald Lee, Charles Edward and John (Preacher), and one sister, Bessie Ruth. Cherishing her memory is son Larry (Denise) and daughter Jean (Sissy) McCoy-Churchwell (Clifford), 3 grandchildren and sister, Rosie Lee Thompson (Donald) of Piedmont, Alabama, a host of nieces and nephews who were more like her children.
