Jerry Mitchell Obituary

Jerry Mitchell, age 86, was born to James and Florence on January 15, 1934 in Wise County, Virginia. He was the oldest of two boys. Jerry unexpectedly transitioned in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 12th, 2020.
Jerry graduated from Lockland Wayne High School. He continued his education at Central State University. Four years later, Jerry graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts. While at Central State, Jerry became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He also met Marva Fowlks. Jerry and Marva wed in 1958. They had two children, Stephanie and Mark. They were best friends and one flesh in marriage.
Jerry accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church for more than 70 years. He served as a Trustee and was a longtime Sunday school teacher. During his tenure as Church Administrator, Jerry was instrumental in establishing Lincoln Heights Christian Academy.
A lifetime educator, Jerry served as both a teacher and administrator in Cincinnati City Schools for over 30 years before he retired. During his early years with the dis- trict, Jerry attended graduate school at Miami University where he received a Master of Arts in Education.
Jerry believed in serving his community. He was a longtime school board member for the Princeton City School District. Jerry also served several terms on the Village of Woodlawn City Council.
Above all, Jerry loved his family. He was a patriarch who always put his family’s needs above his own. Jerry was an excellent cook, avid golfer, photographer, bowler, and jazz enthusiast. His motto is “success is failure turned inside out.” Jerry’s life was one well lived.
Jerry will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 62 years, Marva Mitchell (Fowlks); children Stephanie and Mark (Cheryl). He also leaves to celebrate his life and carry on his legacy six grandchildren Cameron, Kevin, Solomon, Chelsea, Kelsey, and Camryn Elizabeth; two great granddaughters Carter and Cai; and nieces Valeria Lynne Fowlks and Kayla Martin both from Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, his brother, and his eldest son.
