Gary Frazier Obituary

Gary Anthony Frazier was born July 9, 1965 in Hawkinsville, GA. His mother, Fannie Lou Singletary, relocated the family to Hamilton, Ohio in 1966 where she united with the man Gary called father, Charlie Singletary.

Gary was always a social butterfly. Dubbed by friends as “Goonk”, he could make friends very easily and was one that everyone called a friend. In high school, he was extremely popular and respected. He maintained many close relationships with his high school friends after graduating from Hamilton High School in 1984.

Gary was not only well-loved by others, but his love was demonstrated in many forms.

Gary loved Work

Known throughout his lifetime as an overcomer, he overcame difficulty in reading to become a first-class seaman in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he earned his license as a medical technician before being honorably discharged. When he returned home, he secured a job as a highly requested phlebotomist at Fort Hamilton Hospital.

During his employment he was confronted with several challenges that derailed him and tried to interfere with his career. Not one to give up, Gary moved to Montgomery Village, Maryland to connect with his brothers and got back on the path as a clinical technician at the famed Georgetown University Hospital. He was extremely proud of this accomplishment and thrived in his work.

Later, he returned to Ohio where he was employed at Northern Kentucky Center for Pain Relief in Florence, Kentucky. He later left there and obtained another advancement at Christ Hospital. His dream of working in development was realized prior to his passing at the University of Cincinnati Hospital as a clinical research coordinator where he helped with the development of Moderna, a COVID 19 vaccine.

Always one to give back and never give up, Gary embraced his recovery effort and used it to help others win the battle. He served diligently and faithfully at City Gospel Mission where he worked transparently to counsel his clients through their journey. Unashamedly, he shared his story and lived out his purpose so that his life would be an example and his living would not be in vain.

Gary loved Food

All those who knew Gary understood his passion for good food. He thoroughly enjoyed collard greens, ham hocks, oxtails, chitterlings, neckbones, ribs, black-eyed peas, cornbread, and other mouthwatering soul foods. On holidays, he could be found at the stove preparing as well as at the kitchen table eating. He had a voracious appetite.

Gary loved His Church

His appetite for food held no comparison, however, with his appetite for the Word of God. Gary joined Pilgrim Baptist Church at an early age under his self-proclaimed “dad”, Dr. Norman L. Townsel. Gary loved hearing the Word, especially from those who were students of the Word. If a sermon appealed to him in a particular way, he may after service, inquire about his “check”. This love for church was developed early through his participation in the Youth Group and Youth Choir. When he moved to Maryland, he continued serving under watch care at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington D.C.

Upon his return to Pilgrim, he served faithfully through the Usher Board, Search Committee, Transition Committee, Men’s Choir, Courtesy Committee, and as the Men’s Day Chair and Co-Chair of the Transition Committee.

Gary loved Family

Though he loved food and church, there is hardly any comparison to his love for his family. Hawkinsville was made famous due to Gary’s constant recitation about his “people” in Hawkinsville, Georgia. He spoke to his relatives there weekly and was excited about attending holiday meals, trips, and picnics. A highlight for him was the Singletary Frazier family outing each year on Memorial Day. Even in his sickness, he was trying to make that last trip to Myrtle Beach with the family.

He loved his mama and didn’t mind saying it. His nieces, nephews, sister, and brothers held a special place in his life. His sister Trish’s passing was a devastating event for him. However, he did his best to ensure that his niece, Sunday, was cared for.

Gary Loved to Talk!

Gary was a talker, a loud one! Not one to hold back, he would talk to everyone. He was a comedian and could always find something to say in any situation. When the phone rang, the receiver could never be sure who was actually calling, Gary or his alias, Peter Jennings. When he was outside, his voice could be heard a block away. When he was inside, his voice could be heard a block away!

Gary loved Flash’n and Fashion

Gary was flashy! He was so proud of being able to accomplish his dream of purchasing a Mercedes. He kept it clean and shiny, had customized license plates, and parked it where everyone could see it! But he didn’t stop there! He was the fashion trendsetter. He was extremely proud of his investment in Versace, Armani, Lauren, and Louis Vuitton. Recently, he touted on Facebook that he was switching over to “live with Coach”. But Jesus had other plans. Instead, He told Gary, you will be living with Me in Glory land!

On Thursday, September 16, 2021, Gary took off his gold necklaces, his Gucci glasses, his Ferragamo shoes, and his five gold rings to become a lily in the valley, where he can shine as bright as the morning star!
