Carolyn Burress Obituary

Carolyn L. Burress was a loving wife, "Granny," mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She left this world on the morning of November 26, 2023, at the age of 77. 

Carolyn was born to the late William and Bessie (Lee) Grant on October 23, 1946 in Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 41 years, "Rodney J"; sisters, Diane Grant Moore, Angela Peoples; brother-in-law, Carl Moore, and nephew, Kevin Cord. 

Carolyn graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1964. She continued her education at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work. In 1965, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (Theta Chapter) and remained dedicated to sisterhood and service for 58 years. While living in Dayton, she was an active member of the Beta Eta Omega chapter with her best friend Dora Carson. 

Carolyn L. Grant married the late Rodney Jene Burress on January 11, 1980. From this union, they welcomed their baby girl, Stephanie Diane on July 4, 1981. As a family, they were stationed in Biloxi, MS (Keesler AFB) and Washington, D.C. (Bolling AFB). In 1989, they finally settled in Dayton, OH to be close to their families in Cincinnati, OH. 

She was baptized at an early age. In 1991, she joined Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church along with her husband, Rodney and daughter Stephanie. 

Carolyn worked as a social worker for over 30 years. Her professional career began at the Hamilton County (OH) Welfare Department. After she got married, she continued to work in the social services field in Biloxi, MS and Washington, D.C. In 2007, she retired from Montgomery County Jobs & Family Services. 

Carolyn enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading library books, watching cooking shows, dancing, and volunteering/community service. 

Carolyn is survived by her "darling daughter" Stephanie (Kevin Tillery) Burress; granddaughter, Karsyn Louise Tillery; best friend of 59 years, Dora Carson; goddaughter, Tyra Sanders, stepdaughters, Pamela Howard, Karen Lewis, and Angela (Ramon) Guerrero; sisters-in-law, Brenda Anderson, Cynthia Farley; cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
